What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is the process of talking with a trained professional to help you feel better mentally and emotionally. Think of it as getting help for your mind and feelings, the same way you’d see a doctor for a physical health problem.

You and I will meet regularly in a private, confidential setting. You talk about what’s bothering you – maybe you’re feeling anxious, depressed, stuck in bad patterns, having difficulties with food and body image, struggling in relationships, or just want to understand yourself better.

I do not just listen passively. I can help you:

  • Understand why you think, feel, and behave the way you do
  • Recognize patterns in your life that aren’t working
  • Develop healthier ways of coping with problems
  • Work through painful experiences
  • Change thoughts or behaviors that are holding you back

I take different approaches – sometimes we focus on your past and childhood experiences, other times we concentrate on changing current thought patterns, and sometimes we work on improving relationships or accepting difficult emotions. But all of my approaches are in support of the same goal: helping you live a happier, healthier life.

Therapy is not about me telling you what to do. I help you discover your own answers and build skills to handle life’s challenges better. The relationship you and I build together is an important part of what makes it work. People go to therapy for all sorts of reasons – from serious mental health conditions to just wanting personal growth. Therapy truly does help – there is a great deal of research showing that it works.
